Story:
Race Report: Round 5 WORCS Hollister, Ca. With crystal clear blue skies and grass covered rolling hills, the top off road racers in the world gathered in Hollister for round 5 of the WORCS Series. All eyes were on Zip-Ty Racing’s, Malcolm Smith Motorsports, Accelerade’s Bobby Garrison who was still holding on to the points lead going into this round over Ricky Dietrich and Kurt Casselli. Along with Bobby everyone was confident going to this race, but everyone knew that their biggest competition on the track was not going to be each other, it was going to be who could battle the dust. To start the weekend off with some excitement, the women’s pro class put on a great show at this event. Zip-Ty Racing was going to have two women’s racing this weekend, Sherri Cruse and Katie McGuire. They were going to go head to head as they raced together in the same class. Jessica Patterson from the WMA also showed up to ride and test her skills in riding off road terrain. At the start, Sherri was running in third place but by the end of the first lap she had pulled out a 15 second lead. After a few small mistakes being made, Jessica Patterson and Maria Forsberg passed Sherri out in the off road section. As they re-entered the motocross section, Sherri almost made the pass on both of them in one corner and kept charging. By the end of lap 4, Sherri was able to retake the lead over Jessica and start to make a little time on her. At the end of the race, Sherri crossed the finish line 20 seconds ahead of second place. Sherri was definitely on her game this weekend and showed the rest of the girls how to ride off-road. Katie McGuire got out to a good start, but was not able to stay with the leaders in the off road sections. Katie had a few tense moments out in the field but seeing that this was her first WORCS Event, we were very happy with her 8th place finish and safe ride. Andy Jefferson also showed up to let his class know he was back and ready to win. Andy was riding his new Zip-Ty Racing, Malcolm Smith Motorsports, Accelerade RMZ450 which was working great. Andy got a good start and was running in 3rd place as they entered the offroad section. Andy did not want to sit back in the dust, so me made the pass as they re-entered the track from the off road section. Chuck Sun who was leading fell over in the tree turn and Andy was able to slip by and take the lead. From that point on Andy never gave up the lead. Andy was able to pull out a 30 second gap over 2nd place and take the win. In the Pro 2 class, Nick Brozovich got a great start coming around in third place. As they left the motocross track, Nick spun out and practically the entire field got by him before he could get the bike picked up. Nick continued to push and had his work cut out for him because of the heavy dust and slower riders. Nick pushed hard to the end finishing in 6th position. Working his way from almost last to 6th with these kind of conditions was just pure determination. In the pro race on Sunday, everyone knew it was going to be dusty and hard to pass. On the start both Bobby and Ty got good starts but were unable to capitalize on them in the first corner. Bobby came around in 18th position and Ty in 15th position. As they entered into the off road section the dust was really thick in certain sections making it extremely hard to see. “I came up to the section on the hill and almost came to a complete stop because I couldn’t see anything, I lost a ton of time because the dust made it hard to pass.” quoted Bobby. As the race went along, Bobby was able to start gaining some positions and tried to make up the time that he lost to the leaders. At the end, Bobby finished in 8th position and Ty in 22nd. Bobby dropped in the points and now sits tied for third with Kurt Casselli but only one point out of second place. We are looking forward to the next round in Sacramento where we are looking forward to competing with other riders and not the dust. We would like to thank all of our Family, friends, and sponsors for all of their support and we hope to see you all at the next round in Sacramento on June 14-15.
